Vocabulary instruction is one of the cornerstones of effective reading instruction. What is vocabulary instruction? It is the process by which students learn how to write and use new words by practicing them in context. It is also the process by which teachers learn how to teach their students. There are many different approaches to vocabulary instruction. Some teachers focus on frequency. Others on specific relationships. Some use texts, some use computer programs, and some use both.
Effective vocabulary instruction has received a large amount of attention in the research literature, but it remains largely unknown to the general public. The purpose of this paper is to identify important characteristics of effective vocabulary instruction and to develop a model of effective vocabulary instruction.

We know that there is a close relationship between vocabulary and reading comprehension. Systematic instruction in vocabulary is an integral part of a comprehensive literacy system for K-12. I am honored to support the many teachers, coaches, and administrators in building a community that values oral instruction at all levels and in all fields.
The common features of effective vocabulary teaching have been documented in numerous journals and books. Although the research highlights the common elements of targeted vocabulary instruction, the most recent NAEP results on vocabulary show that there was no significant change in vocabulary scores for fourth- and eighth-graders between 2009 and 2011. In short, we still have a long way to go to achieve a significant increase in vocabulary.
Effective vocabulary teaching at all levels and in all subject areas is essential. As the Common Core ELA and Literacy standards increasingly focus on nonfiction and informational texts, vocabulary instruction will play an important role in student success with these texts. Teachers need to be aware of research-based instructional strategies and need ongoing support to implement effective vocabulary practices.
