Britain is known for being an introverted nation. It’s not uncommon to see Brits opt out of social situations rather than confront them with awkwardness. But what are the causes behind Britain’s perceived level of introversion? And does it have any real effect on society as a whole?

Britain has been dubbed the “naughty country” by researchers. In a study of more than 50 countries in 2018, Britain was found to be one of the most introverted ones around with only Qatar and Malta listed as being even lonelier.

The “what an introvert” is a question that has been asked for years. The answer to the question, however, is not as easy as it may seem.

I have seen many places and even more faces in my life. Americans are the most outspoken and loud people on this planet Earth. The Brazilians never seem to sleep and are always dazzling. Australians don’t need much to be happy, as long as they have a surfboard and a 1960 VW bus.

Last year I finally realised what I wanted to do with my life and came to the UK to start my first year studying journalism and media.

Honestly, I didn’t really know what I was getting into.

Here I am, a German returning from Sydney, where everyone talks to you and it rains about four days a year.

For some time now I have been warned about a British disease called Extreme Introversion. But I never really understood what they were talking about until I saw it with my own eyes.

By the week of freshman year, everyone had made friends or seemed content to be alone.

I will never forget what a Swiss-German friend of mine said to me before I came to England. According to her, Brits are hard to tell apart, which means it’s hard to become friends with them, but once they are, they remain friends for life.

I think that’s very true. While most Brits don’t throw around words like Honey or Sugar (that’s more of an American cliché) and probably don’t ask right away how the weekend went, they’re slowly but surely getting closer to you so they can be there for you later, even if you screw up.

I know very well that you cannot lump everyone together, as my German compatriots say, which means that there is always a mixture of introverts, ambivalent people and of course extroverts living together.

However, I believe that in some cultures, such as. In England, for example, there are many norms and customs that I think best suit quiet, reserved personalities.

I’ve traveled in many parts of the world and experienced many different cultures, and I have to say that even though the weather is terrible and the food anything but fantastic, this place has become my home.

Yes, it took longer to adjust to the culture and people than elsewhere. Yes, there were times when I wanted to throw in the towel and leave.

Still, I’m glad I stayed and gave this season the chance to become something great, according to Queen Elizabeth II:
