A bicycle is an excellent mode of transportation. They’re not only cost-effective for traveling to and from locations, but they’re also good for the environment and a wonderful way to stay in shape.

However, if you’re a frequent rider, you’ll want to be sure you buy a bike that you can afford to maintain.

We’ve collected all of our money-saving suggestions to guarantee that you can ride about freely without breaking the bank.

  • With Cycle to Work, you can get a bike for free.

If you have a job (even a part-time one! ), you may be eligible to purchase a bicycle via the government’s Cycle to Work program. This means you can save money on a new bike — according to the program, you may save anywhere from 25% to 39% on the cost of a bike and accessories.

Furthermore, the money is deducted from your monthly income, so you won’t even realize you’re paying for it.

All you need to do now is choose your package (bike and accessories) and you’re ready to go. You may take your Cycle to Work certificate to your favorite shop and exchange it for a bike of your choosing.

To save money on a new bike, look into the Cycle to Work program.

  • Make a bike registration.

Make sure you register your bike when you purchase it, since this will assist you if your bike is ever stolen.

When the kit comes, you may use it to label your bike so that if it is stolen and subsequently recovered, it can be tracked and linked back to you. Isn’t it brilliant?

  • Purchase a used bicycle.

If you just have a few hundred pounds to invest on a bike, a used bike may be your best choice.

If some vendors are nearby, we recommend searching on Facebook Marketplace, Gumtree, and even eBay. But don’t stop there; a friend or family member may be looking to get rid of an old one, so ask around.

After you’ve purchased your used bike, we recommend bringing it to your local Halfords for a free service check. They’ll be able to inform you about any possible problems with the bike, and you’re under no need to pay to get it repaired right away.

  • Purchase your bicycle during a deal.

If you don’t want to purchase used and prefer to buy new, you may still save money by purchasing a bike that is on sale or on offer.

We enjoy a good bargain, but especially when it comes to costly goods like motorcycles. We recommend looking into online deals as well as in-store discounts at stores such as Halfords, Decathlon, Evans Cycles, and others.

Check out our tips to obtaining the greatest bargains on Black Friday and in the January sales if it’s the appropriate time of year.

  • Make your own repairs to your bicycle.

Repairs may seem frightening, but keep in mind that YouTube is your best friend when it comes to these matters.

When compared to visiting a shop, you can learn a lot about a little and possibly save hundreds of pounds in repair expenses. Who doesn’t want to save money?

Pumping up your tires, cleaning the bike (we suggest Muc Off), and even adjusting your brakes are all simple tasks if you want to perform some maintenance yourself. Just make sure you stick to the instructions, particularly when it comes to critical safety features.

Eventually, your bike may need more extensive repairs that you are unable to do, and you will be forced to take it to a shop. Saving money on minor repairs, though, may make a huge impact!

Bike repair coupons from the government are available on occasion and may save you up to £50 on the cost of repairing your bike. Check out our student discounts area to check if the promotion is still active.

  • Lidl, Aldi, and Decathlon all sell bicycle accessories.

If you’re looking for bike accessories, Lidl, Aldi, and Decathlon are all good places to go.

Because these products aren’t always available, your chances of discovering some inexpensive accessories at Aldi and Lidl are more luck than anything else. However, we’ve seen them offer phone holders for handlebars, clothing, and more in the past.

Decathlon, on the other hand, always has a decent selection of bike accessories and apparel.

  • Install mudguards on your bicycle.

Mudguards not only protect you from mud shooting off your tires, but they also prevent you from harming your clothes, backpack, and other bike accessories. This will save you money in the long term since they will not need to be replaced.

Decathlon’s mudguards are one of our favorites, especially since they’re inexpensive and simple to install.

  • Halfords offers free safety inspections.

You can find out which components of your bike need to be repaired for free thanks to Halfords. They do a free safety inspection on your bike and then make a note of what components (if any) need to be repaired.

Best of all, you’re under no obligation to have any of them repaired, so although you’re welcome to have them done at Halfords, you could go to another bike shop (if they’re cheaper) or even do it yourself if it’s something you’re comfortable with.

  • Purchase a high-quality bike lock.

Purchasing a high-quality lock may seem to be a waste of money, particularly if you live in a reasonably secure neighborhood.

However, investing an additional £20–£30 on a more secure lock may be the difference between your bike being safe or being stolen. And if it’s stolen, you might be looking at a new bike costing up to ten times the cost of the lock, if not more! In the long term, it’s clearly a smart investment.

A U Lock with a Cable, such as this one, is a good option.

  • Bikes may be rented for a limited period of time.

If you’re not going to use your wheels very frequently, you may want to consider renting a bike instead.

Many places now have bike rental (such as the Santander and Uber programs), where you may borrow one for a limited amount of time using an app. Payment will be deducted from your bank account, so all you have to do is download the app, enter your card, and remove the bike from the dock.
